This combination yields broth that is packed full of amino acids, electrolytes, and trace minerals.

From the soup aisle to the beverage cooler, there is no shortage of pre-made bone broth. However, while some of these choices are acceptable for certain uses, it is best to prepare your own at home. This is especially true for bone broth that is intended to be used as part of a fast. While it might sound a bit daunting if you’ve never made bone broth before, it is actually a simple process.
What is the best way to make bone broth at home?
Anyone can make nutritious, organic bone broth at home.
You don’t need to have expert cooking skills to make organic bone broth at home. In fact, the recipes I recommend are quite simple and straightforward. I prefer using either organic whole chicken or grass-fed beef as the meat for my broth. Some chicken broth recipes call for use of the head and feet. However, when you see a recipe like this, be sure to avoid these recommendations to ensure quality.
When making beef bone broth or chicken bone broth, I add bay leaves, garlic powder, onion powder, organic apple cider vinegar, whole peppercorns, Himalayan salt, and water. For my chicken bone broth recipe, I also add lemon. The process of making bone broth takes between 1-3 days, so be sure to plan in advance of your bone broth fast.
Advice on selecting ingredients
Not all bone broth is created equal.
Prior to starting a healing fast, there are some crucial things to know about selecting your ingredients. Because a fast provides a unique opportunity for you to restore and nourish your body, it is necessary to make the highest quality broth possible.
First, although it may be tempting, do not use pre-made, store-bought broths. Many of these are high in sodium, lack essential ingredients, and are intended for cooking rather than fasting. Always make your bone broth from scratch at home.
Next, be careful to select high-quality bones. Why is this important? The bones of animals can contain lead (a heavy metal). Lead is toxic, and should be avoided at all times. When you select the bones of chicken and cows that were raised using high standards and organic practices, you can reduce your risk of lead exposure. Although the risk of heavy metals in animal bones remains low, always be sure to use organic whenever possible.
Be Aware Of Toxins
If you have chosen a chicken bone broth recipe, there are additional considerations of which to be aware. Not only should you select organic chicken, but you should also look for chicken that was in a pasture-raised environment. When chickens are fed genetically modified (and sometimes, even non-GMO) soy and corn, they are ingesting phytoestrogens through their feed. These phytoestrogens are then passed on to individuals who eat the chickens that consumed feed containing phytoestrogens. If high levels are consumed, phytoestrogens can mimic estrogen in the human body. Excess estrogen in both men and women can cause harmful side effects. Symptoms of high estrogen include headaches, mood swings, weight gain, infertility, insomnia, anxiety, and memory problems.
Finally, when selecting the supporting ingredients in your chosen bone broth recipe, strive to select organic and certified non-GMO. Conventional ingredients can contain pesticides, preservatives, and other chemicals. However, I don’t advise drinking the broth every day or for extended periods of time. Drinking it too frequently can actually lead to the development of an intolerance. That is why bone broth fasting should be used in moderation.
Additionally, you can enhance your fast with the incorporation of certain ingredients not listed in most recipes. As a best practice for gut health and autoimmunity, use a bone broth fast in conjunction with healthy fats such as coconut oil and MCT oil. Coconut oil and MCT oil have wonderful benefits when used on their own. However, when used together, the broth and fat work within the body to ease symptoms. When selecting a coconut oil or MCT oil, be sure to read the ingredient list carefully, and buy from a trusted source. Always select the highest quality oil that you can find.
